Kiddie Table Time

When I was growing up and we have family gatherings and meals the kids were always set up with a “kiddie table”. You know that small table in eyesight of the adults but separate.

Those seated at this table wore half of the food they were attempting to eat. The other half of that food could be found on the floor. The conversation would have been simple and for sure interesting and hilarious. It was like its own little planet of sorts.

It was at this table that no thought, opinion or idea was discounted. No one judged you if you were wearing half of your spaghetti on your face. And the conversations had at this table were enjoyed by all sitting there.

I sometimes ask myself why I wanted to rush my days at the kiddie table by. Why did I want to rush to the adult table? At the big kids table, you couldn’t wear your food on your face, and it was certainly not acceptable to drop your food on the floor. The conversations there are more complex and serious. Your thoughts, opinions and ideas were not always treasured and accepted like they were at the kiddie table.

It is at the point that you “arrive” at the big kids table that you realize that the kiddie table is truly the best seat in the house. As you sit at the big kids table with the kiddie table in your eyesight you begin to cherish and miss that seat. There they sit, humble, content, talking about odd and interesting things and coloring.

All of this got me thinking. What table do you think Jesus would chose to sit at?

Without a doubt I would say the kiddie table. Why? He is looking for those who are like little children. He is searching for the humble. Those who accept who they are and others for who God created them to be. He savors the simple times and simple and interesting thoughts of the children at the kiddie table. So I have absolutely no doubt that given a choice Jesus would be found with His children at the kiddie table.

Jesus in Matthew 18:1 was asked “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?”. We find his response to this question in versus 2-10 of that same chapter. Jesus brought a single child to the front of the class he was teaching, and he said the following:

“I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Who says you must graduate from the kiddie table?! Certainly not Jesus. Jesus wants us to take up residence again at that table. Some of the best teachers are sitting at that kiddie table! Teachers who understand and embrace the simple pleasures such as a crayon and a blank piece of paper. Creating something out of nothing. Something that brings sunshine and joy to the onlooker. This post was inspired by the drawing pictured above from my Gracie! Take time to sit in the best seat of the house! Sit with your kids and watch what God will teach you through them! One session of sitting at the kiddie table will show you what God desires for you! And He desires some pretty interesting, amazing and yes even simple things for YOU!

Many Blessings,

Liz
